About Outsider Artist
OutsiderArtist.co.uk is an independent UK website about outsider art and graffiti: art made by self-taught people, outside the official art world.
We started the site because the information about these subjects is scattered. There are excellent museums, magazines and books, but few places online where a curious reader can find the whole story, clearly explained and properly sourced, from Jean Dubuffet's collection in Lausanne to Madge Gill's drawings in East London and the graffiti crews of 1980s Bristol.
What you'll find here
- In-depth guides to outsider art, the artists, visionary environments, seeing and collecting, and graffiti in the UK, grouped into topics.
- Key facts with their sources, a timeline and a glossary.
- A where to see directory of museums, galleries, studios, environments and festivals.
- A journal of news, exhibitions and stories.
How we write
Every guide lists its main sources so you can check them. We separate documented facts from legends and say where sources disagree. We name artists and describe their work before their circumstances. Read our editorial policy to see how we research and check our guides.
How we make money
The site is free to read. It may be funded by advertising and affiliate links, which never affect what we write. Read how we make money.
