Editorial Policy: How We Research and Check Our Guides

How we research, write, check and update everything on this site.

Who writes our guides

Our guides are written and maintained by the Outsider Artist editorial team at Website Studio, described on our authors page. We are enthusiasts, not academic specialists, and we rely on the published research of museums, archives and scholars, which we cite. Every guide shows who wrote it and, where a second person has checked it, who reviewed it.

How we research

  • We start from primary and authoritative sources: official bodies, legislation, standards, museum and archive collections, and published research.
  • We list the main sources at the end of each guide so you can check them yourself.
  • We label folklore, legend and disputed claims clearly, and say when the evidence is thin.
  • We never invent statistics, quotes, reviews or testimonials.

How we keep guides up to date

We review our guides regularly, and at least once a year. The "Last reviewed" date on a guide shows when its facts were last re-checked; the "Updated" date shows the last time anything on the page changed.

Corrections

If you spot a mistake, please tell us. We check every report and correct errors promptly, noting significant corrections on the page.

Independence and funding

This site is funded by advertising and affiliate links, explained on our how we make money page. Commercial relationships never decide what we write or recommend.

Use of AI tools

Our guides were researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, then checked against the sources listed at the end of each page. We use AI to help gather and organise information, never to invent facts, quotes or sources. Where sources disagree, we say so. If you find an error, please tell us and we will correct it.
