Outsider Art Museums in Europe and the US
The museums worth crossing borders for, from Dubuffet's collection in Lausanne to Henry Darger's room in Chicago.
In short
- The Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne, opened in 1976 on Jean Dubuffet's donation, is the world's first museum devoted to art brut and holds over 70,000 works.
- The Sammlung Prinzhorn in Heidelberg, museum gugging near Vienna and the Adolf Wölfli Foundation in Bern are essential for European art brut.
- LaM, near Lille, has held a major art brut collection since a 1999 donation from the association L'Aracine.
- In the US, the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore opened in 1995, and Intuit in Chicago reopened in 2025 after a $10 million renovation.
- The American Folk Art Museum in New York has the largest archive of Henry Darger material.
Switzerland
- Collection de l'Art Brut, Lausanne

It holds more than 70,000 works and is the place to see Wölfli, Aloïse, Madge Gill, Lesage and Darger together. It is at Avenue des Bergières 11, open Tuesday to Sunday, with free entry on the first Saturday of the month. See Jean Dubuffet and art brut.
- Adolf Wölfli Foundation, Kunstmuseum Bern
- Holds most of Adolf Wölfli's work, including his books and over 1,500 drawings, shown in rotation and in exhibitions.
Germany and Austria
- Sammlung Prinzhorn, Heidelberg

France
- LaM, Villeneuve-d'Ascq (Lille)
- The Lille Métropole Museum of Modern, Contemporary and Outsider Art has built an art brut collection since a 1999 donation from the association L'Aracine. It reopened in 2010 with a new wing for it, and holds most of Augustin Lesage's paintings.
- Halle Saint Pierre, Paris
- A museum and gallery in a 19th-century covered market at the foot of Montmartre, dedicated to art brut, outsider and art singulier through large temporary exhibitions. It also hosts programmes alongside the Outsider Art Fair in Paris.
- Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval, Hauterives
- The most famous visionary environment. See the Palais Idéal.
- La Maison Picassiette, Chartres
- Raymond Isidore's house covered in broken-crockery mosaic, now a museum owned by the city.
Elsewhere in Europe
The GAIA Museum of Outsider Art in Randers, Denmark, is another specialist museum, and the European Outsider Art Association links many organisations across the continent. Specialist collections and exhibitions also appear in Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain.
United States
- American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore
- Opened in November 1995 by Rebecca Alban Hoffberger at 800 Key Highway, on Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The US Congress named it the national museum for self-taught, intuitive art. It holds about 4,000 works and stages large themed exhibitions.
- Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, Chicago
- Founded in 1991 by volunteer collectors. Its permanent Henry Darger Room re-creates the room where Darger lived and worked. It reopened in May 2025 after a $10 million renovation that roughly tripled its size.
- American Folk Art Museum, New York
- At 2 Lincoln Square on the Upper West Side. Its Henry Darger Study Center, opened in 2001, holds the largest archive of Darger material, and it also holds major works by Martín Ramírez and Bill Traylor.
- Watts Towers, Los Angeles, and Paradise Garden, Georgia
- Two of the great American visionary environments. See the Watts Towers.
Tips for planning a visit
- Check what is on display. Many collections rotate works on paper because they are light-sensitive.
- Look for anniversary shows. Lausanne's 50th anniversary programme runs into 2027, including The World of Armand Schulthess from November 2026.
- Combine museums and environments. Lausanne and Bern, or Paris and the Palais Idéal, make good trips.
- Time it with a fair. The Outsider Art Fair runs in New York each spring and in Paris each autumn.
